Folder Int Year of Sanitation

To put the spotlight on this issue the UN General Assembly declared the year 2008 the International Year of Sanitation. The goal is to raise awareness and to accelerate progress towards the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target to reduce by half the proportion of people without access to basic sanitation by 2015. This folder contains information on Sanitation activities that are being implemented in Uganda by development Partners, NGOs, CBOs, District, Working groups and the government Ministries

FolderTransparency and Accountability

The Government of Uganda's stated priority for reform in the water sector is strengthening the quality of service delivery. The government is concerned that the majority of Ugandans have no easy to reach access to clean and safe water, in part because many water supply schemes are constructed at great cost with public funds but are not properly managed and maintained. The Ugandan government has persued an active and explicit anti corruption strategy within the provision of water and sanitation services.The sector Performance report for 2006 indicates an alarming trend in unit cost increase in service delivery, an increase that may be resulting from the lack of accountability and transparency.

Folder Governance Survey

This component will be implemented in selected areas of Wobulenzi and Bukalasa where we have the two service providers. The governance survey together with the communications assessment will be conducted as a tool both for benchmarking/advocacy and to provide service providers and policy makers with feedback from citizens on their satisfaction with access to services. It will include the communications baseline survey of attitudes, perceptions and practices . The survey will also identify the main areas that need to be addressed during the training (e.g. governance in the water sector, service delivery decision-making processes, quality enhancement), and through stakeholder mapping will identify the specific target groups with whom the program will be carried out.

LeaPPs- Learning for Policy and Practice in Sanitation and hygiene, is a project being implemented by a partnership of three organisation; IRC International Water and Sanitation center as the lead organisation, SNV Netherlands Development Organisation and NETWAS Uganda, with an overall objective of supporting multi stakeholder learning and sharing on household and school sanitation within and between various levels of activity in order to influence change in policy and practice towards sustainable impacts.

FolderSchool Sanitation and Hygiene

School Sanitation and Hygiene Education (SSHE) focuses on the responsibility to provide children with a child friendly and healthy learning environment. It emphasises the provision of sanitation facilities that children need while at school,water supply and the support to children to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge on effective hygiene. Children can in turn communicate their new behaviours and skills to their homes and communities and use it in future when they have become parents themselves.
