An overview of key Ugandan Organisations in the Water and Sanitation Sector.
NWSC is a utility parastatal 100% owned by The government of Uganda. It was established in 1972 under decree No: 34 following recommendation by World Health Organization (WHO). The mandate of the Corporation as defined in the National Water & Sewerage Corporation Statute of 1995, Section 5 (1), is to operate and provide water and sewerage services in areas entrusted to it, on a sound, commercial and viable basis.
The total number of towns currently served by the NWSC are fifteen (17) viz; Kampala, Jinja/Njeru, Entebbe, Tororo, Mbale, Masaka, Mbarara, Gulu, Lira, Fort Portal, Kasese, Kabale, Soroti, Bushenyi, Arua, Malaba and Mukono. These represent the larger Urban Centres within Uganda.
NETWAS Uganda was established in Uganda in 1996 as a non-profit organization. It has an autonomous status and acts as a Country Branch of NETWAS International, which is part of the International Training Network (ITN) for Water and Waste Management which supports the activities of the sector in developing countries.
NETWAS is a founder member of ITN Africa Network, which is actively involved in playing a catalytic role in the water and sanitation sector development activities in Africa. NETWAS collaborates with government ministries responsible for water, health, and environment; training institutions in the sector, NGOs, private sector, bilaterals and multilaterals. It has strong partnership arrangements with IRC, SKAT, SANDEC, UNDP-World Bank WSP-ESA in capacity building. NETWAS countries of focus are: Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia and Ethiopia.
Mission
The mission of NETWAS (U) is to improve the living conditions of the people in Uganda particularly the poor, through capacity building in the water and sanitation sector by way of human resource development, networking and dissemination of information.
Goals and Objectives
NETWAS UGANDA overall goal is to contribute in the sector towards increased sustainability of community based water supply and sanitation projects and Programs by enhancing the capacity (numbers, knowledge and skills) of sector actors.

Strategies
NETWAS Uganda operates in a demand driven orientation, which is hinged on the need to address sustainability of NETWAS Uganda as an organization. NETWAS has therefore developed a number of services and products, which are effectively marketed in the sector. These include specialized training courses for human resources development; consultancy services for Governments, NGOs, donors and community projects ; networking, documentation and information dissemination service, advisory service; adaptive research and community support; participation in sector policy meetings, workshops and seminars
Funding is obtained directly from the beneficiaries of the various Programs and different donors. The Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC) at the moment provides core support.
NETWAS Uganda specializes in offering consultancy services which are geared towards the promotion of community based approaches. Many of the consultancies offered fall within the scope of program/project planning, monitoring, needs assessment, appraisals and evaluation.

Is an international organization with a mission to deliver capacity support to meso level organizations on demand driven and tailor made basis capacity development support to districts through TSU 1&TSU 6 under support to Directorate of Water Development.
