Ecological Sanitation

Ecological sanitation is a new paradigm in sanitation that recognises human excreta and water from households not as a waste but as resources that can be recovered, treated where necessary and safely used again.

Ideally, ecological sanitation systems enable a complete recovery of nutrients in household wastewater and their reuse in agriculture. In this way, they help preserve soil fertility and safeguard long-term food security, whilst minimizing the consumption and pollution of water resources.

FolderUGANDA KNOWLEDGE NODE

Network For Water and Sanitation (NETWAS) Uganda, with support from the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) is hosting the Ecological Sanitation Research (EcoSanRes 2) knowledge node in Uganda.

The (EcoSanRes 2) is an international environment and development program on ecological sanitation, with a mission to develop and promote pro-poor sustainable sanitation on the ground through capacity development and knowledge management.

What is an Ecosan Knowledge node?
It is a network of information, knowledge and expertise in sustainable sanitation.

DocumentHow to make a simple pit latrine and grow fruit trees

Arborloo and Fossa Alterna are two ecological sanitation (EcoSan) technologies that recycle human excreta. These new technologies are an attempt to make EcoSan simple and cost-effective for use by low income communities in Uganda and most rural areas of Africa. These EcoSan options create strong links between sanitation, agriculture and food production and actually work in practice, and can benefit the users beyond the requirement of providing a latrine alone.

DocumentThe Main Features of Ecological Sanitation

Ecological sanitation can be viewed as a three-step process dealing with human excreta: containment, sanitization and
recycling. The objective is to protect human health and the environment while reducing the use of water in sanitation systems
and recycling nutrients to help reduce the need for artificial fertilizers in agriculture.Ecosan represents a conceptual shift in
the relationship between people and the environment; it is built on the necessary link between people and soil.

ArticlePdimu Landing Site EcoSan Project: A Case Study of Masaka, Uganda

Before 2002, there hardly existed any sanitary pit latrines in Pdimu. In March 2002, the construction of the Pdimu Community Eco San latrine was completed. The funding was through the Lake Victoria Environment Management Programme (LVEMP) at a cost of 23 million Uganda shillings, with the community contributing 10% of the initial costs. Two blocks, each having four stances of double vault latrines, were constructed. Each of them had a 500-litre tank for urine collection. There were only four stances of lined pit latrine before the project was implemented.

ArticleWhat is Ecological Sanitation or Ecosan?

Ecological Sanitation is based on the idea that urine, faeces and water are resources in an ecological loop. It is an approach that seeks to protect public health, prevent pollution and at the same time return valuable nutrients and humus to the soil.

The International Water Association group directs its focus towards sanitation systems permitting nutrient reuse, mainly by source separation. The Eco.San group focuses on product oriented systems and cover the whole range from high- over medium- to low-tech systems. Hygiene, socio-economic considerations, technical performance and maintenance as well as implications on resource usage and environment are key issues and institutional issues shall also be included.
