School and household sanitation and hygiene best practices in Uganda

A number of good household & school sanitation and hygiene approaches/practices are being used in the rural and low income-urban settings of Uganda by both government, International and Local NGOs, and quite anumber of lessons have been learnt from them, some of which include;

  • Significant changes in people’s livelihood with a positive impact on home improvements in the districts/villages where they are implemented.
  • Community sensitization is an important part of any campaign, for full community involvement.
  • With existance of organized community groups like women or youth groups, it is easy to integrate sanitation and hygiene promotion within their developmental activities.
  • Where the initiatives/approaches have been supported, coordinated and followed-up by the district local government, there are better chances of replication and sustainability.
